WordPress- the popular CMS that turned 10 years old in 2015 has garnered major traction of the businesses.
According to W3Techs, “WordPress powers about 25 percent of all websites.”
After enjoying the legacy of powerful CMS platform, Automatic, the company behind WordPress found that WordPress has now started aging. Under the hood, if more changes are not made, then it will be difficult to sustain and grow its number of users.
“Our existing code base and workflows had served us well, but ten years of legacy was beginning to seriously hinder us from building the modern, fast, and mobile-friendly experiences that our users expect, ”said Matt Mullenweg, founder of Automatic.
After the efforts of over 100 contributors in 20 months, the new interface of WordPress is completely written in JavaScript and Node.JS.
This is a dramatic face lift. Isn’t it?
There might be several questions raised in your mind that’s muddying the waters like- “Is WordPress leaving the PHP forever,” “Is it rewritten now in Node.JS, ” “How the great move to JavaScript is will be?,” and a lot more.
Let’s clear up the air:
WordPress is developed leveraging PHP language and now, a new admin interface- Calypso is developed that’s built using JavaScript, REST API and front-end tools of Node.JS. Calypso is developed to seamlessly manage content, read blogs, change themes, view stats, make updates and pretty more.
The WordPress Calypso can be downloaded by the users as a Mac app. It enable management of multiple WordPress.com blogs and self-hosted WordPress.org sites without any hassle using Jetpack. It increase the workflow and the speed at which work is done on various websites.
It is intriguing. Let’s elaborate Calypso’s vibrant features:
1) Performance
In the older version of WordPress, multiple pages load slowly and when they are reloaded again, then also they acts sluggish. With Calypso, reloading of pages is no more needed because multiple pages load instantly without any time lag. It improves the overall performance of the website.
2) Editor
Calypso is developed and designed with clean and intuitive interface where immediate post publishing is possible. Furthermore, previewing the galleries before inserting and the web pages for desktops, tablet and mobile is enabled.
3) Multi-device support
WordPress has started supporting all the mobile web versions with matching mobile native applications in Calypso which was not there in place before. This is really an added advantage for the developers that prove to be very effective and efficient.
4) Multiple site management
The need for having separate dashboards and URLs for distinct websites is now alleviated. Using Jetpack plugin, multiple WordPress websites and self-hosted WordPress websites can be managed through a single dashboard on a single URL.
5) Real time update
To view the changes are updated in the website or not, reloading of web page was essential in the previous version that kills time. But, after embracing WordPress calypso, no reloading of web page persisted as changes on the web page will be updated in real-time.
What to do?
Certainly, the launch of new admin interface put up another question before WordPress users whether to adapt Calypso or not. Although it’s possible to use Calypso alongside archaic WP admin, but in reality it’s not a viable option. The excellent features and benefits of Calypso left the users with no reason to not embrace the major shift in WordPress development.
